Consequently, the Eagles became one dimensional as all the attacking threat came from the flanks. This predictably can be costly in the long run. Onazi was very effective in harrying opponents for the ball and releasing it as soon as he got it. However, too many touches enabled Malawi to regain their shape, something has to give here.
The team need to start learning when to release the ball and hold on to it so as to allow the strikers make good runs and avoid offside calls that characterised majority of the attacking threat especially in the first half of the game.
If this can be improved upon, then definitely more chances will be created, the attackers will have more freedom and more goals will be in the bag.
GODFREY OBOABONA IS KING
The former Sunshine Stars stopper is usually the first man on Stephen Keshi's list for any game and it's for a very good reason.
The defender, who just signed for Turkish Super Lig side, Caykur Rizespor has gradually become a rock which Nigeria have built their defence on. Whether he is paired with regular partner Kenneth Omeruo or Azubuike Egwuekwe, he has always proved to be the calming influence in that defence.
It won't be out of place to suggest he is a future captain of the team, and this might not be far off. His decision-making has improved over time and his movement to Europe might give him the added big stage experience that he really needs.
Oboabona is destined for great things with Nigeria, and if he keeps his head high and digs in like he consistently does, then we have something to smile about in the long run.
EMENIKE IS OUR NUMBER ONE STRIKER
Without mincing words, Emmanuel Emenike is arguably Nigeria's number one striker at the moment. The Fenerbahce forward was sorely missed at the Confederations Cup and after making a return to the team for the first time since the Africa Cup of Nations, he capped it with the opener against Malawi.
The powerful forward was a constant threat throughout the game until he was substituted by Shola Ameobi late in the second half. His power-play complements the 4-3-3 system Keshi is usually suited to.
Emenike, who was the top scorer at the last Afcon in South Africa has improved on his finishing and positioning which means the goals will rain in provided he gets the service required.
