Former-Liverpool midfielder Jonjo Shelvey has admitted it was a tough decision to leave Anfield, but he felt he wasn’t being given a fair chance in the first-team, according to the Daily Mail.
And the 21-year-old revealed he was flattered by the comparisons with Reds skipper Steven Gerrard, even as he downplayed the likenesses.

Shelvey made the switch to Swansea from Liverpool this summer, and he made his first competitive appearance in the Europa League against Malmo last week.
Under Michael Laudrup, he’s expected to replace Swans legend Leon Britton as the club’s passing midfielder in the long-term, but Shelvey admits he’s just happy to be playing again after a frustrating end to life at Liverpool.
“You can’t put me and him [Gerrard] in the same sentence because it’s just ridiculous how good he is, but people have compared me to him and that is just an honour,” Shelvey told the Daily Mail.
“I have gone from living next door to him to living on a farm out here but it is good.
“I have enjoyed every minute of being here so far, and my missus is loving it as well. It is a big, big thing to leave, to come away from one of the biggest clubs in football, but I felt that I needed to come and play.
“I didn’t want to sit behind people. I felt that I wasn’t getting a fair crack of the whip at Liverpool but that’s football. I can’t fault any of the players there because they were first class.”
The 21-year-old central midfielder made just nine starts for Brendan Rodgers’ side last season, before he was sold to Laudrup’s team for £6m after taking part in the under-21 European Championships for England.
Liverpool won 2-0 against Olympiakos in their latest preseason match this weekend, which also doubled as Gerrard's testimonial at Anfield.
